La carta, firmada por 90 académicos, dice:
“Escribimos en relación a la decisión del presidente Trump de retirar las tropas estadounidenses de Siria, lo que ha provocado una invasión militar ilegal por parte de Turquía del nordeste de Siria. Esta invasión ya ha provocado un desplazamiento masivo de civiles, y amenaza con llevar a cabo una limpieza étnica y genocidio de los kurdos, sin mencionar el resurgimiento del ISIS”.
La carta continúa:
“La comunidad internacional tiene una deuda con las Fuerzas Democráticas Sirias por su sacrificio para detener y derrotar al ISIS estableciendo la paz y la estabilidad en la región. Han perdido a más de 11.000 hombres y mujeres en la lucha contra el ISIS, y han desempeñado un papel fundamental sobre el terreno en esta lucha. Sus esfuerzos llevaron a la liberación de millones de personas que se encontraban bajo la tiranía del ISIS. Además, en todos los sitios donde han ganado, han establecido un sistema de gobierno ‘confederal democrático’ que es notable, incluso inspirador, por su compromiso con la liberación de las mujeres, así como por su convivencia multiétnica y multirreligiosa. En resumen, son nuestras amigos y aliados”.
La carta añade:
“Esta nueva escalada, inmediatamente después de la decisión del presidente Trump de abandonar a los aliados kurdos, constituye otra agresión ilegal contra los derechos humanos, que ya ha causado cientos de muertes y ha provocado el desplazamiento de más de 100.000 personas, al tiempo que amenaza con una limpieza étnica e, incluso, el genocidio”.
Los académicos piden al gobierno del Reino Unido que “condene inmediatamente la invasión de Turquía”. Asimismo, piden también un “boicot a todos los productos turcos y el turismo a Turquía” y “un retorno inmediato a las conversaciones de paz entre el estado turco y el PKK; y con ese fin, pedimos la libertad del líder kurdo encarcelado Abdullah Öcalan”.
Los académicos también enumeraron una serie de demandas:
“Exigimos que el gobierno del Reino Unido tome medidas para detener esta invasión ilegal de Turquía en el nordeste de Siria.
Exigimos una retirada inmediata de todas las tropas turcas del suelo sirio. Pedimos el fin de todas las ventas de armas a Turquía”.
